§ 13-6. Signs not requiring a permit.

  • No sign permit shall be required for the following signs, unless the sign is illuminated:

    (a)

    Signs erected by a governmental agency to regulate, control or direct vehicular or pedestrian traffic;

    (b)

    Legal notices, warnings, regulatory or informational signs erected by a public agency;

    (c)

    Signs required by law;

    (d)

    "No trespassing" signs not exceeding 15 square feet in area;

    (e)

    Temporary real estate signs advertising a specific property for sale, lease, rent or development, located on said property, provided that such signs do not exceed 16 square feet in area and are not illuminated. These signs shall be limited to one per street front, one per waterfront, and one per golf course front per parcel. Such signs shall not be placed within any public street right-of-way. In the event the real estate sign is located on the waterfront portion of a lot in Carteret County, a coastal area management act permit may be required;

    (f)

    Typical six-square foot standard real estate signs;

    (g)

    Temporary construction signs and financial institution signs displayed in predominantly residential areas, limited to one sign per parcel, not exceeding 15 square feet;

    (h)

    Flags, emblems or insignia of any national, state or political subdivision;

    (i)

    Property number signs not exceeding one square foot in area and bearing only address numbers of premises or other identification of premises not having commercial connotations;

    (j)

    Holiday decorations in season;

    (k)

    Political signs not exceeding 32 square feet.
