§ 10-55. Removal; notice.

  • Any junked or abandoned motor vehicle found to be in violation of this article may be removed to a storage area or other area designated by those enforcing this article. When the enforcement officials of this article shall cause to be removed any junked or abandoned motor vehicle found to be in violation of this article they shall give written notice of the removal to the registered owner at his last known address according to the latest registration certificate or certificate of title on file with the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles, and the enforcement officer shall also cause to be placed a notice of the removal on a prominent location on such vehicle. The notice shall inform the owner of the location of the removed vehicle, and a possible sale or other disposition that can be made of the vehicle under this article. The owner shall be entitled to regain possession of such motor vehicle by paying all reasonable costs incidental to the removal and storage. No notice need be given to the registered owner of a removed vehicle when the vehicle does not display a license plate and the vehicle identification numbers have been removed or defaced so as to be illegal.
